Gucci's Cub3d Sneaker: A Bold Step into the Future of Footwear with 3D Printing


The world of high fashion is no stranger to innovation, but Gucci's latest creation, the Cub3d sneaker, marks a particularly intriguing foray into the realm of 3D printing. Following in the footsteps of other luxury brands like Montclair and Louis Vuitton, Gucci has unveiled a limited-edition sneaker that seamlessly blends its renowned craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. While only 20 pairs will be produced, the significance of this move by a fashion giant like Gucci cannot be overstated. It signals a growing recognition of the potential of 3D printing to revolutionize not just manufacturing, but also design and the very concept of luxury itself.

The Gucci Cub3d isn't just a sneaker; it's a statement. It represents a daring exploration of contemporary luxury, where heritage meets the future. The shoe's most striking feature is undoubtedly its distinctive sole. Created using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), a sophisticated 3D printing technique, the sole boasts a complex lattice structure inspired by the polyhedron. Beyond the futuristic sole, the Cub3d also showcases Gucci's commitment to sustainable materials. The upper is primarily crafted from Demetra, Gucci's own innovative material that combines quality, softness, and durability. What sets Demetra apart is its composition: it's made from 70% plant-based raw materials, primarily from renewable and bio-based sources. This conscious choice of materials demonstrates Gucci's awareness of environmental concerns within the fashion industry. Furthermore, the sneaker incorporates 100% recycled polyester in additional parts of the upper and 88% recycled polyester and leather (processed through a metal-free, chrome-free tanning process) in the internal components.

Matteo Burzio, Gucci's 3D Footwear Designer, offered insights into the design process on LinkedIn. He revealed that the Cub3d's distinctive lattice pattern was meticulously crafted using Rhino and Grasshopper, software commonly used in architectural and design fields. The pattern was then applied to the midsole, showcasing the precision and control that 3D printing allows. Multiple color variations of the Cub3d graced the runway during the Gucci Sprint/Summer 2025 show, further emphasizing the brand's commitment to showcasing this technological innovation. Burzio also hinted at the playful application of the lattice pattern on slip-ons during the SS25 show, suggesting that this is just the beginning of Gucci's exploration of 3D printing.

The exclusivity of the Gucci Cub3d is underscored by its limited production run of just 20 pairs. Each pair will be presented in dedicated packaging, adding to its collectible appeal. The unveiling of this groundbreaking sneaker will take place at the Gucci Via Monte Napoleone flagship boutique from April 16-21. While the Cub3d may not be a mass-market item, its existence serves as a powerful symbol.
